Spyware (also called adware) secretly gathers information through your Internet connection for advertising purposes. It usually arrives bundled with some freeware or shareware programs installed from the Internet like Hotbar, Gator, Bonzi Buddy, online greeting cards, WeatherBug, Xupiter and many other "free" programs or "Tools". What kind of information? Some spyware applications may collect passwords, email addresses, web browsing history, online buying habits, your computer's hardware and software information, your name, age, and sex, for starters. Then it uses your Internet connection to send that information to advertisers and to create pop-up ads, banners and "Spam" E-mail customized to your interest .
